Stephen H. Kellert's Philosophy Page

(A pretentious title, I know, but what else should I call it?)

I am an associate professor in the Philosophy Department at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. My main areas of specialization are the Philosophy of Science and the Theory of Knowledge.

My main research interest is Chaos Theory. My book on the philosophical implications of chaos theory was published by the University of Chicago Press. There is even an online review of my book. My current research is on the ways nonlinear dynamics gets used (and abused) in fields outside the natural sciences -- including, for example, the use of chaos theory in the social sciences.

I am proud to have published a paper in a web journal. It's a rather unusual piece about scientific knowledge, restoration ecology, and ethnic identity. I have also published articles on the nature of objectivity and on the visualization of four-dimensional objects.

The storm has passed, but you still might be interested to know my take on the infamous "Sokal Affair." I recently had the opportunity to give a response to Sokal's attack on Postmodern Science Studies.

Homepages seem to abound with lists. Very well, then, here are my favorite philosophy books.

Our Departmental Home Page has a list of some indexes in case you want to search the Web for Philosophical information.

Still in the experimental stages are three half-serious analogies I have been constructing to help students understand some major Philosophers:
