File Access Guide

ONLY USE THIS GUIDE FOR YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER!

Who Should Use This Option:

  • Your computer has not been configured with the Novell Client
  • You need to access files while off campus
  • You are not using a shared computer such as a computer in a public library or a friend's computer

System Requirements:

  • Windows 2000 or Windows XP (Latest service packs applied)
  • Broadband internet access recommended for off-campus use (DSL/Cable modem)

If you meet the above criteria, this training guide will show you how to use "My Network Places" within Windows to establish an easy link to the Hamline Network Storage resources.  This provides you access to your network drives in a manner very similar to accessing files on your local  hard drive (in your computer).

Creating an easy link to online network storage
Windows 2000

By following these steps, you will be creating an easy link to your Hamline network storage in the "My Network Places" section of Windows.  From the desktop, double click on the "My Network Places" icon. (Windows XP users may have to access "My Network Places" through Windows Explorer if no icon is available on the desktop)

The following screen will appear, displaying all of your current connections within My Network Places.  The icons that actually appear on your screen will very likely be different than those shown below.  Now, double click on the icon "Add Network Place."

The "Add Network Place Wizard" (seen below) will appear and ask for you to type in the location of the Network Place you would like to add.  Copy and paste or manually enter the following location: https://netstorage.hamline.edu/oneNet/NetStorage (Case sensitive)
Then, click "Next."

You will be asked to accept a security question and then to enter your Network username and Password.  Use your Hamline username and password (the same password to login to the Netmail email system or the Novell Network for example).  Enter this information and click "OK."

You will now be asked to name your new Network Place. Enter whatever name you wish and click "Finish."

You will return to the "My Network Places" screen and should now be able to see the new folder you created.  Below, you can see that a new "Your Account on netstorage.hamline.edu" folder has been created.

Double click on the newly created folder, and you should see a list of drives you can access as shown below.  What drives students actually have access to varies greatly, but all students should have at least access to their "Home@HAMLINE"

You have now successfully created a connection to all of your Hamline Network Drives.  Whenever you want to access the files saved on these drives, all you need to do is, from the desktop, double click "My Network Places," and open your newly created folder.

Tips & Recommendations:

  • Create shortcuts to frequently accessed network directories in your "My Documents" directory. Right click on the directory and select Send To>Desktop (create shortcut.) Then, cut the shortcut from your desktop and paste it in your "My Documents" directory.
  • For best results when opening a document through NetStorage, open the target program first (Word, Excel, Power Point.) Then, go to File>Open and browse to your document.
  • Students have a quota limit of 30 MB on the NetStorage server.
