 GroupWise

 Changing your password

For the past couple of years, Network Services has been working on a project to create a "universal password", ie one username and password for all the resources that you access here at Hamline. Rather than having a separate password for Novell, Groupwise, library database access, dorm network access, wireless access, etc, we have been working towards a universal password which we are calling the "Hamline" username and password. This is made possible through a technology called LDAP. Right now Novell, Netmail, dorm network access, wireless access, and library databases all use the Hamline password. During the month of January, we plan to migrate Groupwise to use the Hamline password as well.

This shouldn't change the way you log in - everything should look the same and you do NOT have to install any extra software on your computer. The only thing you need to be aware of is that your password will be your Hamline password (used to be referred to as your Novell password). If your Hamline password and your current Groupwise password are different, when we make the changeover, you will need to start using your Hamline password to log into email. This is true for all means of accessing your Groupwise email - through the Groupwise program (client), through Groupwise webaccess (http://www.hamline.edu/gw/), as well as through POP or IMAP.

Changing your password through Piperline

If you don't know your Hamline username and password, you can look it up through Piperline at http://www.hamline.edu/piperline.html

More information on this process is available at http://forum.hamline.edu/viewtopic.php?t=77

Changing your password through Windows (preferred method)

The best way to change your Hamline password is to log into your Windows workstation here on campus, and then simultaneously press the Control (Ctrl)
Alt
Delete
keys.

That should bring up a window with several buttons, one button should be to "Change Password" - click on that button. Type in your old (current) password, and then type in a new password. Please note that your password has to be at least 5 characters long. Changing your password in this fashion will change your password immediately, and it is the preferred method. If you have questions as to how to change your password, please contact the help desk at x2220.

If you don't have access to a windows workstation on campus, you can reset your password through Piperline, as outlined above.

Why?

Probably the biggest reason that we are implementing this change is to eliminate confusion as to which password to use. If there is one username and password for all your resources, there is less confusion. This also helps in support calls, as there is less confusion as to which password needs to be reset, or which password is not working. The fact you are always using the same password also helps you remember your password, and should result in less problems with you forgetting (or writing down) your password. We are also able to better automate the password change mechanism to help provide better service to you.

If you have any questions, you can contact the help desk at x2220.
