Do I Need Permission?
The Fair Use Doctrine permits some uses that don't require permission. Educational use alone does not make it fair use. Go to the Fair Use Checklist to help you determine whether you need to obtain permission.
Copyright permission is generally needed when:
- Making and distributing copies to an entire class
(whether in a coursepack or individually)
- Scanning and posting an article in Blackboard
- Putting photocopies on Reserve at the library
Get Permission*
1. Print the Job Ticket
2. Fill it in.
3. Submit it to Ikon (drop it off at the Ikon Copy Center)

Have you checked to see whether your article or book is available full text online via a library database? If you make a link from Blackboard to an article in a database, you don't need copyright permission; there's no charge to your students or to Hamline; and it can be available to your students immediately.
