Systems Integrator
Computer Support Services (CSS), a division of Information Technology Services (ITS) Full Time, Monday through Friday, with rotating on-call duties
Purpose of Position
The position of a CSS Systems Integrator in ITS at Hamline University is an advanced technical position responsible for managing the enterprise-wide computing environment and encompasses multiple roles and responsibilities as described below. This position interacts with staff, faculty, and students and requires the applicant posses a thorough understanding of customer service behaviors, skills, and techniques and a willingness to approach tasks enthusiastically and pro-actively and in the spirit of collaboration. This position has a probationary period of 6 months.
Essential Job Functions
The applicant should be able to demonstrate experience in the following or similar technologies to be considered as a qualified candited. Experience as a desktop administrator for MacIntosh computer systems is a minimum requirement.
- MacIntosh OS X 10 Support
- Administer Mac OS X 10 on University MacIntosh computers (a minority OS on campus)
- Design and implement installation and cloning procedures for campus Macs
- Active Directory, Windows Server and Windows XP/Vista Administration
- Participate in the design and administration of the campus Active Directory implementation, currently for use with specialty applications with the possibility of a future campus-wide deployment
- Manage the interaction of desktop PC’s with Active Directory and Windows Servers, including authentication, group policies, login scripts, etc.
- Perform regular maintenance on the Windows Server OS for 25-plus Windows servers
- Provide high-level administration and support for the standard campus Windows desktop (currently XP, with Vista on the horizon)
- Enterprise Software Distribution
- Prepare software packages for campus installation using relevant tools such as MSIEXEC, AdminStudio, Orca, VMWare and ZENworks
- Utilize Novell ZENworks to assign permissions and distribute applications to appropriate users, groups and campus locations
- Work with faculty and staff members to discover an appropriate installation plan for unique/specialized applications
- Client/Server Application Management
- Install, implement and perform upgrades to both the server and client pieces of key University client/server applications
- Administer and troubleshoot both the server and client modules of applications, including Sophos antivirus, Patchlink patch management, Equitrac print/copy accounting and DeepFreeze workstation protection; includes administration of servers and license managers
- Manage the Blackberry Enterprise Server and the 60-plus Blackberry devices on campus
- Technical Support and Customer Service
- Troubleshoot connectivity problems and application errors using a knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS and network communications between switches, servers and desktops
- Provide third level support, assisting the Desktop Technicians with challenging support calls and interfacing with users as necessary
- Engage in high-level call management, ensuring that Desktop Technicians handle support calls appropriately from beginning to close
- Participate in bi-monthly pager rotation for campus network emergencies
- Assist with resolving miscellaneous computer-related problems such as faulty campus ID cards
- When working to resolve any issue, communicate well with fellow ITS members and with users, and do so with a strong customer service orientation
- Hardware and Software Upgrade Planning and Implementation
- Annually evaluate and identify workstation hardware for the University’s Microcomputer Replacement program (MRP)
- Determine through research and testing the implications and requirements of version upgrades of client/server applications in terms of downtime, backout plan, administration going forward, learning curve for users, etc.
- Design and implement version upgrades of client/server applications
- Desktop Image Design and Deployment
- Determine the operating system to be used on standard campus machines (currently Windows XP), and which settings, applications, policies, etc. are to be put in place
- Design and implement a desktop imaging process for imaging standard campus PC’s, making use of the University’s imaging tools, such as the ZENworks imaging server and Linux partition, sysprep and ENGL
- Continually reevaluate the campus imaging process to ensure the highest possible level of service is provided
Network Printing Management
- Configure hardware as necessary for digital imager copy/print devices, as well as for desktop printers (protocol management, secure print, mailboxes, etc.)
- Create, maintain and troubleshoot Novell NDPS print queues
- Configure selected print queues and public computers for use with Equitrac for print job billing
- Planning and Design
- Upgrade, retire, or add technological implementations and strategies as the needs of the University change over time
- Consider the implementation of new technologies as they emerge
Work Environment
- Over 75 Novell, Windows and Linux servers, several running in VMware; over 1200 desktop computers
- Over 100 network printers and digital imagers (printer/copier)
- 10 computer labs and over 25 classrooms with enhanced technology
- Serving the College of Liberal Arts, three Graduate Schools and the Law School
- Serving the University administration, faculty, staff and students
Education, Experience and Skills Required or Preferred
- High School Diploma required; college degree preferred, but not required
- Minimum of 3-5 years working with computer systems, applications and networks required
- Significant experience with the installation and troubleshooting of OS X 10 and MacIntosh computers is required
- Experience with imaging, patch management and application repackaging required
- Solid experience with Windows server products and Active Directory experience required
- Must have experience with Windows XP, Windows Vista and common user applications such as MSOffice and enterprise-level email systems
- Ability to learn technologies and software quickly, to research new applicable technologies and software and to apply such in the work place (an ongoing process) is required
- A strong understanding of network connectivity required (TCP/IP, DHCP, network topology, etc.)
- Experience with Novell networks and/or ZENworks imaging and application object creation highly preferred
- Must have excellent customer service and communication skills; ability to recognize and communicate differently to a variety of users (faculty, staff, students, administration) with differing levels of technical understanding
- Strong documentation skills an added plus
- Must have the ability adjust to changes in process and/or to move from one technology to another as dictated by the needs of the University
