Position Profile

The Athletics Director is a highly visible university administrator who will be expected to be a key interface between the university and students, parents, alums, and other stakeholders in the university and its athletics programs.  Hamline University expects the Athletics Director to continue the successful trajectory established over the past five years.  This includes conference championships in Cross Country, Track, Men’s Hockey, and conference playoff or national qualifiers in several other sports (Volleyball, Swimming and Diving, Gymnastics, Baseball, Softball, and Men’s and Women’s basketball).  In addition, Hamline’s facilities include the venerable Hutton Arena and the state-of-the-art track and football field housed in the Robert and Alexandra Klas Center.  With the exception of Gymnastics, men’s and women’s sports compete in the historic Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

Intercollegiate athletics is a key component of Hamline University’s undergraduate student experience.  Approximately 30% of undergraduate students are formally involved in Hamline athletics, either as athletes, cheer and dance team members, or in support roles.  The Athletics Director will be expected to establish and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of university administrative offices, including development and alumni relations, facilities services, admissions, student affairs and the academic deans.

The integral role of the Athletics Director means that he or she will also be a focal figure as the university continues to enhance its athletic accomplishments and deliver on the goals of the university’s strategic plan (Creating Pathways to Distinction).  The Athletics Director will work with other university administrators and officers to ensure that Hamline University achieves its vision of a national reputation as a diverse, learner-centered university.  The Athletics Director will be seen as the chief advocate for the intercollegiate athletics programs and will be expected to lead the programs to even greater successes, ensure that the athletics programs have adequate resources, and sustain the academic mission of the university.

Hamline University was founded in 1854 as Minnesota’s first university.  It enjoys an excellent academic reputation and connection to community in its primary location in the St. Paul-Midway neighborhood.  True to its Wesleyan roots, Hamline University is deeply committed to community engagement and social justice.
