TWO-TIMES RUNNING: HAMLINE CD-ROM IS AGAIN A FINALIST FOR WORLD’S TOP ENVIRONMENTAL MULTIMEDIA AWARD
ST. PAUL, Minn. (June 21, 2006) – One of Hamline University’s interactive CD-ROMs, Big Foot: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. A Step-by-Step Guide to Shrinking Your Environmental Footprint,

has been selected as a finalist for the world’s top environmental multimedia award for the second consecutive time. The Wildscreen Festival’s Panda Awards are the world's most prestigious awards for films and interactive multimedia about the natural world. They are the environmental equivalent of the OSCARS®, and are sought by leading producers from all over the world.

Big Foot was produced by the University’s Center for Global Environmental Education (CGEE) in collaboration with the City of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. It is one of four finalists competing for a Wildscreen Panda Award in the Interactive category. The winner will be announced in Bristol, England, at a gala award ceremony on October 18th. CGEE took top honors at the 2004 Wildscreen Festival for the Waters to the Sea: Chattahoochee River CD ROM.

Other finalists selected from more than 412 entries at this year’s Wildscreen include the BBC, the National Geographic Society, the Discovery Channel, PBS, and numerous other major international media production entities representing 45 countries.

“We’re thrilled to have received this honor once again,” said Tracy Fredin, the program’s executive producer and CGEE director. “It’s wonderfully affirming to see that the interactive learning experience we’ve created has compared very well two times running with productions by some of the world’s largest and best funded production entities.”

“The creative approach we’ve taken with Big Foot, which involves rich animation and a more cartoon-like look and feel, is a departure from our other interactive multimedia programs,” added John Shepard, program producer and CGEE Assistant Director. “It seems to have struck a chord.”

Big Foot enables students in grades 4-8 throughout the U.S.—the program’s target audience—to measure the impact of their family’s and community’s lifestyles on the environment through a concept called the ecological footprint. The program’s interactive footprint calculator provides an estimate of the natural resources needed to sustain each student’s way of life. Modules on reusing household products, recycling, smart shopping, water conservation, landscaping with native plants, and smart growth (ecologically friendly community development) show how environmental impacts can be reduced. A companion activity guide has a more detailed footprint calculator plus classroom and field activities that complement the program’s contagiously engaging interactive content.

Big Foot reflects CGEE’s ability to work with a wide range of domestic and international partners,” said Fredin. Principal collaborators included the City of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, under the leadership of Environmental Coordinator Lesley Stovring, with funding from Hennepin County’s Solid Waste Abatement Program and the Metropolitan Council of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Spanish translation of the program was provided by Transware, an Irish company that used acting talent in Mexico.

In addition to producing internationally acclaimed media products, CGEE, which is an integral part of Hamline’s Graduate School of Education, also offers graduate coursework for educators, project-based service-learning programs for K-12 students, and a wide range of public educational initiatives.
