Master of Arts in ESL (MA/ESL)
WHO CAN APPLY?
- People who have completed a licensure or certificate program from the Hamline University Second Language Teaching and Learning Program. There is a minimum 3.25 gpa requirement for graduate level coursework from all licensure or certificate programs.
- People who have completed a licensure or certificate program elsewhere. Please note that no more than 16 graduate credits may be transferred into the MA in ESL. Transfer credits must be approved by SLTL faculty, and will be evaluated on a case by case basis. There is a minimum 3.25 gpa requirement for graduate level coursework from the licensure or certificate program.
- If you are planning on completing the TEFL or Adult ESL certificates, or the K-12 Licensure strand at Hamline University, you should first apply to and complete the specified program before you apply to the MA in ESL.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
- Complete an MA in ESL application.
- Submit 2 letters of recommendation from professors with whom you have studied. These may include Hamline professors.
- Submit an official sealed transcript of undergraduate and relevant graduate work from a regionally accredited college or university. Hamline licensure and TEFL program graduates do not need to resubmit transcripts. **You do not need to supply transcripts for courses taken at Hamline.
- Submit an academic paper dealing with a second language issue that shows that you can:
- synthesize information from several sources; or
- apply information from academic or research articles to your teaching or personal experience. Your paper may be one you have written for a class, but we suggest that you make revisions before you submit it. The paper must be your work alone; it can not be a group project.
- MA in ESL students must have at least two years of high school or one year of college foreign language, or the equivalent. Foreign language study must be documented.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION
Application deadlines are rolling. Other required coursework may be taken at any time during the year.
NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS
Passing scores on the PPST test (Minnesota standards); or a TOEFL score of: 107 for internet-based, 253 for computer-based, 625 for paper-based. A score of 7.5 - 8 on the IELTS is equivalent to these TOEFL scores.
APPLICANTS WITH FOREIGN CREDENTIALS
Applicants who have done course work at foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated course-by-course by an education credentialing agency Applicants with foreign degrees must submit official or certified-true academic records, along with a certified English translation for all undergraduate, graduate, and professional work to a U.S. credentialing agency. This evaluation must include classes taken, dates of enrollment and award of degree(s). An explanation of the grading system, if different from the U.S. 4.0 grade point average system, should be submitted as necessary.
