Lawrence Sutin is a full professor in the Hamline University Graduate School of Liberal Studies M.F.A. and M.A.L.S. programs. He also teaches in the low-residency M.F.A. program of Vermont College.
Larry is the author of two memoirs, Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Memoir of Love and Resistance (Graywolf Press, 1995) and A Postcard Memoir (Graywolf Press, 2000), excerpts from which may be viewed at amazon.com. He has also written two biographies, Divine Invasions: A Life of Philip K. Dick (Harmony Books, 1989) and Do What Thou Wilt: A Life of Aleister Crowley (St. Martin's Press, 2000). His most recent books are All Is Change: The Two Thousand Year Journey of Buddhism to the West (Little, Brown, 2006) and a new novel, When to To Into the Water, 2009.
His writing awards include a Loft-McKnight grant, a Midland Writer's Award, a Minnesota Book Award, and the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire of France. He was the Hamline GLS Teacher of the Year in 1992 and the National MALS Teacher of the Year in 2005. His teaching philosophy is to try to treat all persons as he himself would wish to be treated, a.k.a. the Golden Rule.
