MFA Applicants

Hamline University will waive the $30 application fee if you apply online!


How to Apply

To apply online, you will need to create a Login ID of up to nine alpha-numeric characters and a six-digit PIN number. Please remember your ID and PIN; this will allow you to begin the application form, and save it and finish at a later time.

We suggest you that you put your writing sample and responses to the essay questions in Word format and email them to the Graduate Admission Office.

You may also cut and paste the text into the application form if necessary. (Please review the questions below before starting your application process.)

Essay questions

1. Write an artistic statement that focuses on your background, experience, and goals as a writer in a three-to-four page, double-spaced essay.  Please include in your essay the following: (a) college or post-college coursework, published works, and/or awards or honors received in writing; (b) your own strengths and weaknesses as a writer; (c) personal and/or professional goals you hope to attain through this program; (d) additional work or experience that seems relevant to this application.  (Note: Please focus on your adult experience with writing, beginning with college.)


2. Choose a single book or writer you have a significant interest in as a writer and discuss that influence in detail in a two-to-three page, double-spaced essay.  You should include reference to key stylistic or content elements which you believe to be of special importance.  (Note: We are most interested in your critical thinking and writing ability here.)


Writing Sample

MFA in Writing: Attach a 20-page creative writing sample. Prose should be double-spaced. Choose whatever you regard as your best work.

Low Residency MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults: Attach a writing sample in at least one of the following areas: 2-3 picture book stories, 20 pages middle grade prose (double-spaced,) 20 pages young adult prose (double-spaced.)

What must be submitted separately:

  • Official transcripts from your regionally-accredited, undergraduate degree-granting institution. Transcripts should be sent directly from the institution to the Office of Graduate Admission (address below).

  • Two letters of recommendation. Request these letters from two people familiar with your academic and/or professional qualifications. Letters of recommendation should be sent  to the Office of Graduate Admission, address below.

  • Any supplemental materials you wish the admission committee to consider. Supplemental materials should be sent  to the Office of Graduate Admission (address below).
