Hamline’s monthly “Lunch with Frederic Chopin,” in honor of Chopin’s bicentenary year, 2010, is extra special this March, since the concert takes place on the actual date of his birth! Yun Ji Kim plays Chopin’s Second Piano Sonata. Free to the public. Join in for music and birthday cake!

Puccini's "Madame Butterfly"
A lightly staged concert version of Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly,” featuring a globally experienced singer, Kaori Williams, with a group of young Minnesota artists who will be important singers in the future.  This is an opportunity to hear wonderful music from voices who will be big names in the years to come.

Documentary Film: "The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo"
The Hamline student organization Students for a World Without Genocide will present a documentary film “The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo” which discusses the brutal war that has been raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has left tens of thousands of women and girls systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated, and tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army.

Immediately following the documentary film, a panel including speakers from Breaking Free, the Center For Victims of Torture, and the Office of Representative Betty McCullom will discuss the issues of rape and torture. This event is a collaboration between MISA and the Students for A World Without Genocide.

International Women of Distinction Coffee Hour
The Office for Multicultural and International Student Affairs (MISA) will also be holding a coffee hour devoted to international women who are leaders in social and political movements. This event will also include a small discussion regarding international perspectives on women’s rights and empowerment.

"Chopin the Passionate Patriot!"
The month of March continues our celebration of Chopin’s bicentenary in this final Keyboard ConversationĀ© of the year. Jeffrey Siegel talks and plays the music of Chopin and shows that the Polish piano phenomenon held a torch for his homeland. The spirit of Poland, in its dances and rhythms come through in the dance music of Chopin. Special ticket offers for MPR members and members of Hamline University (alums, students, faculty and staff).

"Slithy Toves meets Judas Maccabeus" 
Two of Hamline's major ensembles, the Hamline Orchestra and the A Cappella Choir, join together for a special  presentation of works from Baroque to contemporary: four choruses from George Frideric Handel's beautiful “Judas Maccabeus,” along with Edward Marcus's premiere written especially for this concert, “Jabberwocks, Crocodiles, and Soup,” a colorful and humorous setting based on Lewis Carroll's “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass.”

Pianist Jerome Rose in concert
Jerome Rose is a pianist with a great passion, one of the last links to the Romantic schools of piano playing.  His international career started in his twenties, when he won the Ferruccio Busoni International Competition and has gone non-stop ever since.  His performance will pay tribute to Chopin, but will also explore the late piano sonatas of Franz Schubert, transcendent music to be sure.

The Tallis Scholars Master Class
One of the pre-eminent choruses anywhere will be giving a concert at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis on this date, but first they will stop at Hamline University’s Sundin Music Hall to give a free workshop/demonstration on the choral music of the Renaissance. The Tallis Scholars have made this music their specialty for the past 37 years. Gorgeous sound and supreme musicianship will make this a must-attend workshop.

SoloDuo
The Minnesota Guitar Society has invited Soloduo to perform at Sundin Music Hall. Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli met in the state of Texas, far from their native Italy, in autumn of 2000. A year later, they formed Soloduo, which has since performed throughout Europe and North America.
