An ESL student teaching experience is required for all licensure - seeking students. Because this is a K-12 license, an ESL teaching experience is required at both the elementary and secondary levels. The length and grade level(s) of this practicum will vary according to your previous experience teaching ESL in a K-12 setting. After you are accepted into the additional license program, your advisor will assign you to a "practicum category" which details the scope of the student teaching which you must complete in order to be recommended for licensure. If you have been working in an ESL classroom while completing your coursework in the ESL program you may be eligible for a change in your category assignment prior to student teaching. You may petition this change by submitting a written request to the SLTL office. Please refer to the chart below that details the practicum categories.
Prior to student teaching you will be required to attend a one day, no cost/no credit practicum seminar. You should attend this seminar the semester before you plan to student teach. This seminar is typically held on Saturday and you must register for it through the professional development catalog, just as you would a class. The practicum seminar is designed to explain the requirements of student teaching and the ESL portfolio as well as begin the process of placing you within a public school classroom.
Practicum seminar is held once every semester and we are typically able to place students with a cooperating teacher/classroom year-round. Please note, however, that finding placements in the summer time can be very difficult and you may not be able to fulfill all of your practicum requirements at one time.
