The Tutoring Program

The Tutoring Program matches Hamline students who feel underprepared for a certain course, or simply want to ensure they do their very best, with students who have excelled in that course.  We are able to provide tutors for many subjects offered at Hamline, and there is no cost to students for the service.

The Tutors

Tutors are Hamline students who have been recommended by faculty for their aptitude for the subject and personal characteristics.  They participate in regular training activities to learn how to provide well-informed, efficient service to students.

Tutors are attracted to the position because of their love for the subject and enjoyment of sharing their knowledge with others.  They also share the methods that have helped them succeed academically: careful reading, thorough note-taking, disciplined attention in lectures, and many subject-specific skills.

Connecting with a Tutor

  1. Visit the Center for Academic Services front desk in the lower level of Bush Library to check current offerings. If the course in which you need help is not listed, ask the receptionist for a tutor request card.

  2. Contact your tutor to arrange a time to work together.  Unless special computer or lab equipment is required, you will meet in the Academic Services area in the lower level of Bush Library.

If you find you cannot match schedules, please contact Julie Thompson at 651-523-2912.

  3. At midterm evaluation forms will be available in the lower level of Bush Library. These forms give you an opportunity to evaluate the tutoring sessions and the tutor. We use the information from the evaluations to improve our services.

How to Obtain the Most Out of the Tutoring Program

  1. Use your tutor as just one of your academic resources.
  2. While extremely helpful, your tutor cannot replace the assistance and insights a professor can provide during office hours, the benefits of the Writing Center and Academic Skills programming, or your own hard work.
  3. Be aware that tutoring does not work as a “quick fix”.
  4. Come in early in the term (tutors will not be assigned after the twelfth week of classes) and work regularly with your tutor.
  5. Come prepared.
    1. Bring your textbook, assignments sheets, class notes, and returned quizzes and exams.
    2. Have the reading done and get as far as you can on your own.
    3. Prepare questions in advance for your tutor.
  6. Be respectful of your tutor’s time.
    1. Be on time for appointments.
    2. Cancel or change appointments well in advance. Any student who fails to show up for two appointments without contacting the tutor in advance will be dropped from the program.
    3. Do not ask to meet with tutors during midterm or finals week. They need to concentrate on their own work at those times.
    4. Meet with your tutor one to two hours per week for assistance with material you attempted but could not master on your own.  Extended meeting times may be made in special circumstances (such as in the case of a student with a learning disability) with the permission of the director.
