Carla Smith
After graduating from Hamline in 2000, Carla volunteered with the American Refugee Committee, the United Nations Association of Minnesota, and Chicanos Latinos Unidos en Servicios. With guidance from Hamline faculty, Carla spent three years in China to help create a new private university and became Vice President of Academic Affairs. She returned to the United States to attend Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government for a Master in Public Administration and Georgetown Law Center for a law degree. At Harvard, Carla received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Student Teaching. At Georgetown, Carla was a Student Ambassador, worked in the Admissions Office, and is currently a member of the Georgetown Immigration Law Journal. Next spring, Carla will participate in Georgetown’s International Women’s Human Rights Clinic to focus on women’s human rights in Swaziland. This past summer, Carla worked for the global law firm of Latham and Watkins in New York, where she worked on pro bono projects; most notably with Sanctuary for Families to provide immigration remedies for domestic violence victims under the Violence Against Women Act. After graduating next spring from both Harvard and Georgetown, Carla will work in New York City as an attorney. Carla eventually hopes to become involved in international development and U.S. foreign policy making.
