Hamline University

Oratorio Society

Hamline University has two mixed choirs, the Oratorio Society and the A Cappella Choir, both conducted by Professor George Chu. The Oratorio Society of Minnesota inaugurated its first concert season in 1980, and since that year they have collaborated with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minneapolis Civic Orchestra, Rochester Symphony and Chorale, Minnesota Chorale, Minneapolis Chamber Symphony, and Mississippi Valley Orchestra in choral masterworks ranging from Bach's Mass in B Minor to Verdi's Requiem.  They appeared at Orchestra Hall with Rosemary Clooney and Doc Severinsen, and have worked in concert with contemporary composers including Eric Stokes, Carol Barnett, Elizabeth Alexander, Arthur Maud, and Bonia Shur.

Each concert season now includes one major work with players from the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra, as well as three or four concerts of innovative choral music.  Recent compact discs have featured Kodaly's Missa Brevis, Rachmaninov's Vespers, and Theodorakis' Canto General.  The Society also brings outreach concerts and workshops to greater Minnesota through its Viva Coro! program, and received the 1997 Award for Innovation in the Arts from United Arts and 3M.
