Intermezzo from Carmen Suite No. 1 by George Bizet

Associate Professor, Kathy Thomsen, published an article on Dalcroze Eurphythmics in the August 2009 issue of The American String Teacher.  Dr. Thomsen and co-author, Barbara Flooding, conductor of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, wrote "Practical Dalcroze for String Teachers:  The Dalcroze approach promotes musicianship skills by focusing on movement of the whole body.  Long-term strategies such as Dalcroze can enrich a curriculum, enliven learning, and improve performance."  (This article is available to members of the American String Teachers Association at www.astaweb.com)

The Music Department is widely recognized for its excellent training of students in performance, education, history, theory and composition. For more than 50 years the department has provided a training environment for College of Liberal Arts students, producing musicians of distinction for careers in a variety of professional fields, and educating amateurs to know and make music. The faculty are dedicated professional musicians who are active in both performance and teaching. The department has been an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1961.

Our discipline is best experienced by the making of music, through singing, playing, composing, improvising and moving. It is enhanced through reflective study, critical thinking, and analytic and historic contextual study. The synthesis of the physical, intellectual, and spiritual knowing of music is both our method and our goal. All music courses, lessons, and ensembles are open to nonmajors. Some of those require students to be highly skilled, others require intermediate level skills, others are designed to initiate the newcomer to the study of music.

Hamline's ensembles include students from all areas of the College of Liberal Arts. These ensembles range in size from large (45) to small (4), and include the A Cappella Choir, instrumental chamber ensembles, Jazz Band, jazz combos, Orchestra, Renaissance (Chamber Singers), Wind Ensemble, and Women's Chorale.
