Course Goals
Recommended to sophomore year students who want to major or minor in English. These courses familiarize students with critical terminology and practices in the discipline of Literary Study.

Department Requirement
Year-long courses to be taken in sequence. Required for the major/minor

At leas one survey taken before or taken concurrently.

Research Methodology
Build further disciplinary and theoretical practice. Use the MLA Handbook effectively and practice critical reading and writing extensively.

Oral Presentations
Move towards student classroom leadership through contribution of questions, discussion, and small and large group work.
Independent Work
Provide foundations to move from guided to more independent work, such as asking appropriate questions regarding texts and generating textual evidence.
Peer Groups
Discussion of course texts and the analysis of student written texts, revising and editing drafts moving from instructor guided to student directed experience.
Close Reading
Emphasize glittery and critical terminology and further practice interpretation.

Editing and Revising
Continue with greater expectation of ease and independence.

Theoretical Practice
Emphasize critical terminology. Incorporate theoretical and critical terms into discussions and in the production of texts.
