Department of Communication Studies

The communication studies major is intended to help students understand the processes by which meanings come to be shared. Course work in this area focuses on helping students become aware of the complex web of forces that influence message creation, dissemination, reception, and impact. Courses are designed to help students understand why communication functions as it does in a variety of contexts. Courses in communication studies seek to help students develop the analytic skills necessary to determine (1) the character of communication interaction processes, (2) the impact of those processes as enacted, and (3) how they as individuals might be effective communicators in different contexts.

Individuals interested in specialized areas within the communications industry (for example, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, or advertising) should carefully examine the options presented here regarding ways to pursue their interests.
