Guide to Bush Library

HAMLINE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Hamline University has two libraries. The Bush Memorial Library serves the College of Liberal Arts and the Graduate Schools. The Law Library, located in the Law building, serves the Law School. Hamline faculty and students have library privileges in both libraries. A Hamline ID card with a barcode is required to borrow materials from the libraries. Periodicals do not circulate from either library.

OFF-CAMPUS ACCESS TO LIBRARY RESOURCES

With an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you can connect to Hamline's networks and do much of your research from home. Check with the Information Technology Service's web pages or call the Computer Lab Help Desk (651) 523-2220 for more information on ISPs and connecting to Hamline.

THE CLIC LIBRARIES

Bush Library is a member of CLIC (Cooperating Libraries In Consortium). The other CLIC libraries are located at Augsburg, Bethel, Concordia, Hamline Law, Macalester, Northwestern, St. Catherine, and St. Thomas. A Hamline ID entitles you to use the resources of these libraries. In addition to sharing resources, the CLIC libraries share an online catalog of their holdings: CLICnet.

REFERENCE DESK

The Reference Desk is located just in front of the Entrance/Exit gates. Reference librarians are there to instruct and assist students with their research and information questions. This is the place to ask questions about how and where to locate library materials or how to find your way around the Library and its resources.

Reference Desk phone number: (651) 523-2375.

CIRCULATION DESK

The Circulation Desk is located to the left of the Entrance/Exit gates. Hamline I.D. cards (with barcodes) are needed to check out materials. Hamline students, faculty, and staff are eligible for cards. Alumni may obtain their library cards from the Bush Library Circulation Desk. After verification of graduation, the card will be activated. Alumni privileges extend to Hamline Bush Library and Hamline Law Library, only. Alumni library cards will be housed at the Bush Library Circulation Desk.

Books are checked out at the Circulation Desk on the main floor of the library, and circulate for six weeks. Faculty may check books out for one whole term. Renewals may be requested twice. Reference books, periodicals, and certain curriculum lab materials do not circulate. Music CDs circulate for three days. Audiocassettes, CD-ROMs, DVDs and videos have a loan period of four hours and may not be taken out of the Library. Reserve materials have a loan period of two hours and may not be taken out of the Library.

Circulation Desk phone number: (651) 523-2374.

ACTIVATING YOUR LIBRARY CARD (Your Hamline ID)

Your Hamline ID will function as your Library card once you have been entered into the CLIC database. Although students' records are entered into CLIC in coordination with registration, there may be a brief lag between the time you register and the time your record is added. Before you check out materials from Bush or any of the consortium libraries for the first time, you should stop by Bush Library's Circulation Desk and have your ID scanned to verify that you are in the CLIC database. If you have registered, but are not in the system, you will be asked to present a copy of your class schedule to verify that you are indeed enrolled at Hamline University. It will then take a few minutes to create a record for you and we thank you in advance for your patience.

FINES AND CHARGES

You will be charged for overdue, damaged, or lost materials. Upon a third overdue notice, patrons are charged a $65. lost item fine, of which $15. is a nonrefundable service fee. Reserve and video overdues are .50 cents per hour. Recall overdues are .25 cents per day.

RESERVES

Reserves are the non-textbook materials assigned or recommended by faculty to their students for class, and include books, articles, audiocassettes and videotapes. Reserves are located at the Circulation Desk.

Since they are high demand items, reserve items have the following limits: 1) they have a loan period of two hours, 2) no more than two reserve items may be checked out by an individual at the same time, and 3) usually reserves may not be taken out of the Library. However, some reserve material may leave the Library overnight if checked out within two hours of closing. (The Circulation Desk worker can tell you whether or not it is o.k. to take a reserve item out overnight.)

Reserve items may be searched by using the "Hamline course reserves" section of CLICnet, the Library's online catalog, or looked up in the Reserves Notebook located at the Circulation Desk.

PRINTING & PHOTOCOPYING

Public digital imaging machines (combined printers/photocopiers) are available on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Library and in the basement near the Computer Help Desk. All students, upon registration, are provided with a PIN number for printing and photocopying. (Note: this number is different from your Piperline PIN number and is used exclusively for printing and photocopying.) If you forget your PIN, you can always retrieve it by going to Piperline.

When using Library or lab computers you can print to the public digital imaging machines by entering your printing PIN number at your PC. To use any of the public digital imagers for photocopying you can swipe your ID card, which is encoded with your printing PIN number in the mag stripe area on the reverse, or enter your printing PIN on the keypad.

Continuing Studies students have also been assigned a printing PIN. They can access this on Piperline or find out their printing PIN at either the Computer Lab Help Desk in the basement or at Student Administrative Services in the Law/Grad building. Continuing Studies students will need to show either a Hamline ID or a photo ID and Social Security number to obtain their printing PIN.

Walk-up users (e.g., community visitors, alumni, other ACTC students, etc.) may print or photocopy using the public digital imaging machines by purchasing a card from the Computer Help Desk in the basement of the Library. It is also possible to pay for photocopying with coins or dollar bills at the digital imaging machines on the 1st and 2nd floors.

Microfilm and microfiche reader/copiers are located near the Reference Desk on the first floor. The cost is .10 cents per page for microfilm and microfiche copies.

RESTROOMS AND NONSMOKING POLICY

Restrooms are located in the northeast corner on each floor of the library. Smoking is not permitted anywhere in the library.

LOCATING MATERIALS USING CLICnet

CLICnet is our online catalog, a database representing the collections of the CLIC member libraries. The computer terminals are located directly in front of the Reference Desk. Search CLICnet by author, title, subject, or keyword to find the materials you need. (There are also several other search options available--speak with a Reference Librarian if you'd like some help.)
If the item you need is checked in here at Hamline, the status will be listed as "available." Books are located on the 3rd floor, and arranged by call number with the following exceptions:

  • REFERENCE designates that the book is found by call number in the Reference Collection on the first floor
  • OVERSIZE BOOK indicates that the book is shelved on the third floor's "oversized books" shelves, located directly in front of the "A" call numbers
  • CURRICULUM LABORATORY means the book is located in the Curriculum Lab on the 2nd floor.

If the book you want is in CLICnet, but not currently available at Bush Library, you can request a copy from another CLIC library via computer using the red "request" button. When available from another CLIC library, the material will be delivered to our library by courier, usually within three working days.

LOCATING MATERIALS IN BUSH LIBRARY

See Bush Library Map

REFERENCE COLLECTION The entire first floor of the library consists of reference materials. Reference materials are non-circulating (i.e., cannot be checked out of the Library) items such as encyclopedias, indexes, almanacs, dictionaries, and atlases. In CLICnet, the location for these materials is identified as "HAM Bush Reference". ERIC documents and vertical file materials, such as annual reports, are also on the first floor.

BOOK STACKS
Stacks are open and you are free to browse and choose your own materials. Circulating books (i.e., books with call numbers A - Z that you can check out) are shelved on the top floor (3rd) of the library. The curriculum and children's literature collections are located on the 2nd floor. If you need assistance, ask for help at the Reference Desk.

PERIODICALS
Check CLICnet or the Journals @ Hamline tool to see whether Hamline owns a particular journal or newspaper. Also, be sure to check whether we have the volume/year that you need.

All periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title on the 2nd floor and are non-circulating.
  • Current year's periodicals are shelved together, beginning in the 2nd floor gallery across from the elevator. The latest copy is on display. Find the rest of the year's copies by lifting the hinged display shelf.

  • All previous years' periodicals are also on the second floor, bound and arranged alphabetically.

CIRCULATION DESK
Reserves, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and music CDs are all shelved here. Ask for items by call number and title at the Circulation Desk.

CURRICULUM LAB
Hamline maintains a curriculum lab for CLA and Graduate education students. The Curriculum Lab is a collection of textbooks, professional literature, and children's literature. Circulating items are cataloged in CLICnet. Workday phone: (651) 523-2366.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

Most of the Library's electronic resources are accessible through the computers in the Library and at Hamline's computer labs and dorms. Most databases are also available from off-campus via the Bush Library web page, using our proxy server. (Note: off-campus access via the proxy server requires a netmail account. Call the Reference Desk (651) 523-2375 for assistance with Library indexes, email admin@hamline.edu for questions about netmail or Piperline.)

From the Bush Library web page, you can access most of the Library's electronic resources. There are three main types of electronic resources currently available:

1) library catalogs for finding books (e.g., CLICnet)
2) journal indexes/databases for finding articles, and
3) free web-based resources that can be identified by using web search engines, directories (e.g., yahoo, WWW Virtual Library), or the subject guides and directories created by the Librarians at Bush Library.

The Library's web page also has links to our e-books and the online journals to which we subscribe.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

To obtain articles from journals not owned by Hamline's Libraries or books not available in CLICnet, you can fill out an Interlibrary Loan request form. (First-time interlibrary loan users need to set up their ILLiad (interlibrary loan system) account, before making a request.)Delivery time for this service varies depending on factors such as availability and what part of the semester it is. Please plan your research accordingly. If you have questions about interlibrary loan please contact the Reference Desk.
