124: Japanese Civilization
Instructor: Richard
Kagan
Goals: To appreciate the cultural and social
foundations of traditional Japan, to understand how Japan developed
after the war, to be able to use the library and to write research
papers.
Content: Japanese myths, literature, the development
of feudalism and the rise of the nationalistic state. Postwar
Japan's cultural and economic achievements will be placed in
historical perspective. Materials will be drawn from Japanese
translations. Japanese language will be taught for five minutes
each lecture hour.
Teaching Methods: Lecture, short papers and
discussion.
Assignments: Three short papers, a mid-term
and oral final exam.
